Outreach
I enjoy sharing the excitement of science and astronomy with the general public. Much of my outreach connects my recent work on cosmic acceleration and the evolution of the Universe with broader audiences through public lectures and community programs.
I am also passionate about expanding access to careers in science and astronomy to everyone, and to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone can perform their best.
Public Lectures
Science Sundays: Unraveling the Mystery of Cosmic Acceleration In this talk, I discuss how we measure the expansion of the universe to try to understand the nature of dark energy. I have given various versions over the last few years. Watch on YouTube
New Vistas in Astronomy: I have given numerous talks at the Perkins Observatory in Delaware, Ohio. Some of the titles were A Walk in the Lyman Alpha Forest, Black Holes for Beginners, Three Ways the Sun Could Destroy the Earth, The Dying Art of Celestial Navigation, and George Ellery Hale and the Founding of Modern Astrophysics.
Community Engagement
- Planetarium Shows: I enjoy presenting in conjunction with planetarium shows at Ohio State. My favorite is pairing my research with “5000 Eyes - Mapping the Universe with DESI” Watch on YouTube
- Friends of Ohio State Astronomy & Astrophysics (FOSAA): I participate in various events organized by FOSAA, which supports our department’s mission and community outreach. I have given talks about DESI and JWST results in the last few years.
- Upward Bound Astrophysics Institute: I organize an annual Astrophysics Institute each summer as part of the Upward Bound program at Ohio State. This initiative helps prepare first-generation and low-income high school students for success in higher education through hands-on science.
